Dear Employer or Owner,
If you are asking yourself, “When should I fire this person?” you already know the answer. You’re not looking for permission. You’re looking for a date on the calendar that feels less scary than today. If you’re like my old boss, please don’t go taking a holiday right when everyone needs you. Better yet, stop hiding, as everyone around you is watching.
Here’s the tough-love version, as I’m always ready to help!
Toxic employees are rarely fired in the moment they should be. They’re fired months after the signs were already flashing red. So skip the guessing game. If this sounds familiar, the good time wasn’t tomorrow. It was already behind you. Stop looking the other way.
The Signs You’re Already Late
Look around as your best people are quietly job hunting. Toxic employees or employers don’t just make life miserable for everyone else. They make top performers wonder why they are absorbing the cost of somebody else’s bad behaviour. Again, if you ask someone what their strength is, don’t use it against them. Because it would appear you’ve started managing around them, not managing with them. You look like you’re busy when you are rearranging schedules, meetings, and projects to avoid friction; this isn’t leadership, dear Watson. It’s damage control, and it has a shelf life.
“They’re difficult, but they’re brilliant” is the sentence that keeps toxic people employed years past their expiration date. Brilliant doesn’t cancel out corrosive — it just makes the corrosion more expensive to clean up. Wake up, sleepyhead, this is hurting your business.
I am amazed when HR has a complaint file that is thicker than the training manual. If you’ve documented that much, part of you has already made the decision. You’re just waiting for someone to make it easier.
Why Leaders Wait or Do Nothing
These three excuses come up each time:
1. What if I’m wrong about them?
2. What if it looks bad?
3. What if we lose their expertise?
None of these are really about the employee. They’re about you avoiding a hard conversation, knucklehead. And every extra week you wait is compounding interest on a debt your culture will have to pay. Good employees don’t quit jobs. They quit environments – Hello, McFly, do you hear me?
Your credibility as a leader isn’t built on easy decisions. It’s built on integrity, you know, the verbiage you use every time you describe your company. Somewhere in your office, someone’s watching to see if you’ll finally notice what they’ve been quietly absorbing. Don’t make them wait for an answer you already know.
Don’t be a coward; it doesn’t look good on you.
